The additional thing Penzance brings to the table is being pressed into flake, allowing a unique marriage of the tobaccos rendering an earthiness and smoothness second to none. If you can find the stuff give er a whirl, ya might like it but try not to harbor any unrealistic expectations of it, its just a very nice, expertly blended crumble cake. I suspect I'll need to smoke pounds and pounds to figure it out! Yet, upon this first light it was instantly apparent that this blend has earned its devotion quite deservedly. I didn't like it very much, then, due to the fact that my few encounters with tobacco had been of the Walgreens varietyI'll say no more on that. It is a confused "everything and the kitchen sink" mixture that doesn't deliver a consistent experience throughout the bowl, from bowl to bowl, or tin to tin. Subjective: This is the tobacco I find myself wanting to smoke most often. This is a blend of Va.s, turkish , oriental and Latakias togeter they sing in harmoney, Upon opening the tin I first had a hard time defining what I smelled Not bad at all but different a somewhat Smokey Beef Jerky mixed with an old woodsey smell. Penzance is an interesting offering, yet I couldnt get satisfaction out of it despite tyring different pipes, packing configuratons, and rubbings. It tops my list. Very earthy in that kind of way. Is it a flavoring agent or some type of exotic oriental leaf? I smoked this one all the way down to the ashes. Margate is better. That creepy old man on the internet had won, look at what he did to me. Latakia dominates, but the background interplay of the Oriental and Virginia hold my interest with no problem at all. It has some Balkan like thickness and creamyness to it. It's great with single malt Scotch Whisky,or even coffee. If you really like it, you'll love Penzance. After the third or forth light the pipe is lit with thin smoke output. Exceptionally smooth oriental and latakia blend with those two weeds being the main players. I've tried this MANY times over the past 6 years. Cannot pick out the virginias by themselves. Components: Virginia Family: Virginia Cut: Ribbon. I will stick with Gaslight, the Dunhills and my other classics and will not bother with Penzance no more. Quickly discovering that there was none to be purchased, I began my search for a sample or partial tin that an owner might be willing to trade and was lucky enough to acquire a good amount by networking through many people. Curiously they have a fair amount of Iodine that occurs naturally. I have always found the subtleties of latakia interesting, but the blends with which I had previously experimented either overpowered me with the latakia's dominance (which I find both overstimulating and boring all at once), or suffered from a less than optimal quality (a "dirt-like" taste). As others have said, why send an alert if there is no possibility to actually order the product? First smoke had no taste, and was too moist. My first thought was that if one enjoys Latakia he will really love Penzance and if not, smoking Penzance will make him love Latakia. I ended up landing on Olives. I was able to pick out several flavor profiles as the bowl burned: wood, earth (albeit not bitter in any sense), leather, spiced cream (think eggnog). I very much enjoyed the moderate to heavy volume of cool smoke and the taste/aroma was wonderful. Highly recommended. Crumbling it out into those tiny cubes adds to the ceremony of pipe smoking. Penzance tobacco is tinned in a charming golden colored rectangular tin. After a 25 yr. hiatus, I started smoking a pipe again. Char then light and moderate attention allows a smoke without relight. Peaceable puffing. 6 months later I taste a soapy floral essence, especially on the retrohale. It's best smoked apart from lighter blends. Penzance can get a little sour in some spots, which is why I can't give it a completely top rating. A nice but not too bold Latakia presence, takes turns with the Orientals to deliver some great variations through the Virginia's. I may purchase another tin; I'll certainly smoke it again - but I believe Margate still ranks as the top of the English/Balkan heap. It needed a relight but left the pipe dry. It is indeed smooth, but I find Margate smoother and more complex. I am not disappointed. It will be flufy and take to fire quite well. Some blends that have very high doses of latakia are only occasionally enjoyable to me, this however has a large dose of latakia and is more regularly enjoyable to me. I can't give the details like the more experienced and knowledgable here. This is a great tobacco. So, remember, this is one mans experience. An airtight bag in which the loose tobacco occupies 8 oz. This amazing blend could could easily be an all day blend for me.
